Cycling to the path of glory

Ronaldo has created history by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the Asian Cycling Track Championship. Singh’s National record achievement in a continental tournament has opened gates of opportunity and inspiration for many other youngsters to take up the cycling sport.    

Ronaldo Laitonjam Singh, who became the Junior Asian Champion in 2020 and later went onto to become the Junior World Champion, is a star of the Indian national cycling team and his national record holder achievements have made him the most promising star of the asian cycling circuit. His silver came after he gave a tough fight to Japan’s experienced rider Kento Yamasaki, who won the gold. Kazakhstan’s Andrey Chugay won the bronze in the event.

Hailing from Imphal in Manipur, Ronaldo began his cycling career at the age of 16 and was selected to the Indian team in 2018. He is the reigning junior Asian records in 200 metre sprint and team sprint category. 

Amid a cheering home crowd at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi recently, Ronaldo won three medals for the country including the most important Senior Sprint category silver which gave him national media attention. 

The other medals won by him were the bronze medals 1 Km Time Trial and Sprint team category. Speaking to the press after his silver, Ronaldo said though he had an eye on the Gold he is glad that he could win the silver for the country for the first time ever. He claimed that his best-ever performance in the event has helped him improve his techniques as well.  Including the three medal haul by Ronaldo, the Indian team did a respectable performance with a total of 23 medal wins which includes 2 gold, 6 silver and 15 bronze. 

Ronaldo is a rage on social media platforms. His own Instagram account has a huge following and he keeps his fans engaged with his training and fitness videos and pictures. 

Ronaldo and the Indian team’s performance in the recent tournaments is a glittering testimony of India’s rising dominance in the cycling arena. A sport which was not very popular in the country till recently. With many youngsters taking up cycling as their passion, the future seems bright for Indian cycling possibilities.
